RCMP Member FAQ
Who is the RCMP Foundation?
The RCMP Foundation (formerly called The Mounted Police Foundation) is the not for profit organization that manages the commercial use of the RCMP’s image through the RCMP licensing program. They work closely with the Strategic Partnerships and Heritage branch, and were created to protect the image and integrity of the RCMP’s intellectual property by monitoring its commercial use. Through the licensing program, the RCMP foundation collects royalties and uses these royalties to support community programs which have a link to the RCMP. Since it’s inception in 1994, the RCMP Foundation has provided over 2.8 million dollars to over 600 community initiatives across Canada in areas such as drug awareness, youth programs, crime prevention, victim services and internet safety.
What else does The RCMP Foundation do?
Other projects include an annual Gala to raise funds for Canada’s youth at risk and raise awareness of the RCMP’s work within the community and partnerships with corporate Canada to create programs such as the Child Identification Kits which are provided free of charge to RCMP Detachments and community groups and organizations.
Doesn’t Disney own the rights to the RCMP image?
In 1995 Disney was given a 5 year contract to handle the marketing and licensing of RCMP products on behalf of the Mounted Police Foundation. Disney never owned the rights; they just acted as an agent on behalf of the RCMP due to their international presence, superior licensing knowledge and appropriate corporate image that met the RCMP’s needs. The agreement has now expired more than 7 years ago, and although there was some controversy over the decision, the experience Disney offered set the licensing program on smooth path which now is fully operated by the RCMP Foundation.
How can the RCMP Foundation help my community project?
The RCMP Foundation has two funding rounds per year, one in the spring and one in the fall. If you are involved with a community group on a continuous basis then you can work with them to fill out the online funding application. The entire application process takes approximately three months so be sure to allow enough time between the application being submitted and the date of the event.
